Mikie Sherrill, the Governor of New Jersey, revealed that a software error allowed more than 6,600 illegal immigrants to register to vote in the state between June 2023 and June 2024. The error occurred when the motor vehicle system registered noncitizens who were asked if they wanted to vote. While fewer than 400 of these individuals actually cast ballots, the administration announced the case as a primary reason for Congress to pass the SAVE America Act. The administration's push for the legislation aims to require states to obtain documentary proof of citizenship during registration. While the administration alleged that the number of noncitizens on the rolls could be much higher than Sherrill's count, the company IDEMIA stated it was responsible for transmitting information rather than validating eligibility. Democrats have alleged that the SAVE America Act is a voter suppression bill, while the administration maintains it is necessary for election integrity. The Department of Justice is currently investigating the case to determine the specific details of the registration error.
