Aung San Suu Kyi Meets International Committee of the Red Cross Representative for First Time in Years
Aung San Suu Kyi, the 81-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner and former leader of Myanmar, met with Arnaud de Baecque of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Monday. This marks the first confirmed outside contact for the democracy icon since she was deposed by a military coup in 2021. The meeting occurred in Naypyitaw, where the military government released photographs showing Suu Kyi in traditional Burmese attire, appearing relaxed and in good health. Her son, Kim Aris, welcomed the visit as a positive development but noted that he still lacks independent confirmation of her well-being. Since her detention, the military government has kept her condition secret, leading to international pressure for transparency. The meeting comes as the military-backed government seeks to end its diplomatic isolation, with leaders from the US, China, and Thailand pushing for greater access to the former leader. The administration of the military government has moved Suu Kyi to house arrest to serve the remainder of her sentence, which is widely regarded as politically motivated.
