Hearst acquires Disney's 50% stake in A+E Global Media for $1.2 billion in cash
Hearst has reached an agreement to purchase The Walt Disney Co.'s 50% interest in A+E Global Media for approximately $1.2 billion in cash. The transaction, which concludes a year-long process, is expected to close in September. Upon completion, A+E Global Media will become a wholly owned Hearst business within its entertainment group. Paul Buccieri, President & Chairman of A+E Global Media, will continue to-lead the company following the transaction under the leadership of Steven R. Swartz, President and CEO of Hearst. The deal marks the end of a joint venture that began in 1984, where Disney and Hearst were equal partners since 2012. While A+E Global Media remains profitable and debt-free, the move allows Disney to focus on its core operations and generate free cash flow. The company owns a vast library of assets including the A&E, History, and Lifetime brands, as well as stakes in various ventures like Vice TV and Propagate Content.
