U.S. Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett ruled on Tuesday that President Donald Trump must disclose detailed financial information regarding his various business interests as part of a $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The lawsuit stems from a BBC documentary that edited together two parts of President Trump’s January 6, 2021, speech, creating the impression that he directly commanded his supporters to storm the Capitol. While President Trump’s legal team argued that the case should focus primarily on reputational damage, the administration announced that the BBC is entitled to explore the finances of more than 400 companies held in the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust. The ruling allows the broadcaster to examine whether the documentary's editing negatively impacted the value of the president's brand and assets. The BBC has requested the dismissal of the suit, arguing that the documentary was not broadcast in the United States and that President Trump’s subsequent election victory suggests the edit did not harm his reputation.
