Nouriel Roubini predicts artificial intelligence will drive massive economic growth and necessitate a universal basic income to manage job displacement.

Nouriel Roubini, the economist famously known as "Dr. Doom," argues that artificial intelligence will trigger a significant technological revolution, potentially doubling US economic growth to 4% by the end of the decade. While many fear that AI and robotics will cause "massive technological unemployment" across both blue-collar and white-collar sectors, Roubini maintains an optimistic outlook on the transition. He suggests that simply raising the retirement age will be insufficient to address the shrinking Social Security trust fund, which is projected to run short by 2032. Instead, Roubini predicts that governments will eventually need to implement a universal basic income to redistribute the wealth generated by machines. He noted that the economy is already moving toward this model, where governments may eventually take ownership stakes in major tech firms or provide guaranteed payments to cushion the effects of automation. By 2050, Roubini forecasts that annual GDP growth could reach nearly 10%, providing the necessary resources for governments to support citizens as machines perform the majority of human labor.
