Nouriel Roubini predicts artificial intelligence will necessitate universal basic income as machines replace a large portion of the human workforce.
Nouriel Roubini, the economist known as "Dr. Doom," argues that the rise of artificial intelligence will fundamentally reshape the global economy, making universal basic income an eventual necessity. Speaking with Bloomberg TV, Roubini stated that because AI and robotics are expected to replace a significant share of the workforce within 20 to 25 years, simply raising the retirement age will be insufficient to sustain Social Security. Roubini anticipates that artificial general intelligence will drive a massive surge in productivity, potentially increasing global GDP growth to 10% by 2050. He suggests that governments can tax the "winners" of this AI revolution to redistribute wealth to the general public. While some view AI-driven job displacement as a threat, Roubini maintains his outlook is optimistic, envisioning a future where machines perform most of the labor. This vision aligns with other tech leaders, such as Elon Musk, who predicts that robotics will eventually make working optional for humans.
