Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster identified the discovery of a drone carrying an explosive device at Leipzig/Halle Airport as a very serious security incident. The drone, which was found in a secure cargo area near Ukrainian Antonov transport planes, was equipped with a bomb made of PETN and semtex plastic explosives. Although the detonator was faulty and the device did not explode, the 800g of explosives could have caused significant damage to nearby aircraft. The incident caused a temporary suspension of flights, with the north runway reopening late at night while the south runway remained closed. A second unidentified flying object collided with a drone-affected cargo plane, causing minor damage. Initial evidence suggests the incident was a Russian-orchestrated plot, marking the first time an explosive drone has been found in Europe far from the Ukrainian border. German authorities are currently investigating the origin and design of the drone, with state prosecutors and counter-terrorism units taking over the lead.
