Drone Pilot Alexander Forrest Captures Rare Footage of a Humpback Whale Birth in Australia
Drone pilot Alexander Forrest recorded a rare marine mammal sighting off the coast of New South Wales, Australia, on July 28. While monitoring a humpback whale migration, Alexander Forrest noticed a female whale traveling at an unusually slow speed. The whale suddenly surfaced, and a plume of blood appeared as a newborn calf emerged to take its first breath. This footage is believed to be only the fourth complete humpback whale birth ever captured on film and the first ever recorded by a drone. The Organisation for the Rescue and Research of Cetaceans in Australia (ORRCA) noted that while humpback whales give birth annually, the full process is rarely witnessed. The drone team, including fellow operators Tanya Snowden and Dominic Cotter-Dephoff, monitored the mother and calf for several hours to collect detailed behavioral observations. ORRCA scientists plan to analyze the footage for a peer-reviewed scientific publication. The sighting may provide valuable data on humpback whale reproduction and maternal behavior, potentially challenging previous assumptions about where these animals reproduce.
