German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that a drone equipped with an explosive device posed a "new quality of danger" after it was discovered near the south runway of the Leipzig/Halle Airport. The drone, which carried approximately 800g of PETN and semtex plastic explosive, failed to detonate due to a faulty detonator. Authorities confirmed that the drone entered the secure cargo flight operations area, landing just meters away from a Ukrainian Antonov transport plane. While the identity of the specific culprits remains under investigation, initial evidence suggests a Russian-orchestrated plot. The incident occurred during a period of heightened security as Western officials have accused Russia and its proxies of staging various attacks across Europe. A second unidentified flying object collided with a DHL cargo plane, causing minor damage. The airport, a major freight hub and a base for Ukrainian cargo planes, was temporarily closed for safety. Experts noted that the presence of an armed drone far from the Ukrainian border represents a significant shift in security considerations for international aviation.
