Los Angeles County fire officials released a report on Tuesday identifying Southern California Edison equipment as the cause of the 2025 Eaton Fire. The investigation concluded that electrical arcing events on an out-of-service transmission tower ignited dry vegetation, causing a conflagration that killed 19 people and destroyed more than 9,000 homes and businesses. The fire, which began on January 7, 2025, scorched 22 square miles during extreme weather conditions including high temperatures and powerful winds. Kathleen Dunleavy, a spokesperson for Southern California Edison, stated that the utility is reviewing the report and has taken its role in the fire's start seriously. While the utility has acknowledged its potential involvement, it has also filed lawsuits claiming that local agencies failed to provide timely evacuation warnings and sufficient water resources. The Los Angeles County Arson Fire Investigation Unit and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection conducted the joint investigation. Fire Chief Anthony C. Marrone noted that while the cause is determined, the focus remains on assisting residents in rebuilding their lives and ensuring lessons learned drive meaningful change.
