Southern California Edison equipment sparked the deadly Eaton Fire, according to a final report from fire officials.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department and the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection released a final report on Tuesday identifying Southern California Edison equipment as the cause of the Eaton Fire. The blaze, which began on January 7, 2025, was sparked by electrical arcing events on an out-of-service transmission tower. This event caused burning material to fall into dry vegetation, igniting a conflagration that killed at least 19 people and destroyed nearly 9,000 structures. Southern California Edison has previously acknowledged its equipment was a likely ignition source. However, the utility has filed lawsuits alleging that local agencies failed to provide timely evacuation warnings and sufficient water resources during the fire's progression. The fire burned over 14,000 acres and was fully contained by January 31, 2025. The report concludes that the utility is responsible for maintaining its lines to minimize the risk of catastrophic wildfires.
