Electra to invest $850 million in new Springfield, Ohio aircraft factory to produce hybrid-electric planes

Electra is investing $850 million to construct a new aircraft manufacturing facility and corporate headquarters in Springfield, Ohio. The company selected the site after a year-long search of more than 140 locations, choosing the area for its proximity to the Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport and the National Advanced Air Mobility Center of Excellence. The facility will produce the EL9 Ultra Short, a nine-passenger hybrid-electric aircraft capable of taking off in as little as 150 feet. The project is expected to create nearly 2,000 jobs for engineers, mechanics, and technicians, with an average salary of $92,000. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the plant designed to eventually produce 800 aircraft annually. Local leaders, including Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Springfield Mayor Rob Rue, praised the investment as a transformative move for the region. The administration of the project involves a collaborative effort between the City of Springfield, the State of Ohio, and various public and private partners to establish the area as a national leader in advanced air mobility.
