Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, recently shared an open letter urging U.S. policymakers to avoid "premature restrictions" on open-weight AI models. The letter, which grew to 50 signatories within a single day, argues that open-weight models—which allow users to download, modify, and run AI on their own infrastructure—are essential for American technological sovereignty and economic competition. The administration announced that it will monitor whether Chinese companies are stealing American intellectual property through "covert industrial distillation," a process where smaller models are trained using the outputs of larger ones. While some officials fear that Chinese models, such as Moonshot AI's Kimi K3, could be exploited, the coalition argues that openness actually improves security by allowing more researchers to audit and patch vulnerabilities. The letter highlights that open weights prevent "lock-in" to single providers and distribute benefits across the economy. Notably, while companies like OpenAI and Google joined the coalition, Amazon and Anthropic remained absent, reflecting different strategic positions on closed frontier models and AI safety.
