Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers confirmed that a mass shooting occurred at Charles Young Park in downtown Lexington on Saturday evening. One victim was pronounced deceased by the Fayette County Coroner's Office, while four others were injured, including a four-year-old child, a 14-year-old child, and two adults with non-life-threatening injuries. Police responded to the 200 block of Midland Avenue around 6:48 p.m. Firefighters were dispatched shortly after. The City of Lexington enacted an Emergency Mobilization Plan, declaring a police staffing emergency at 7:24 p.m. and instructing all Third Shift officers to report for duty. Devine Carama, the director of ONE Lexington, witnessed the gunfire from eight inches away and noted the life-saving actions of first responders. Council member Emma Curtis stated that the city is working with the police department to implement the mobilization plan. Chief Weathers urged the public to notify the department of anyone inclined to use a weapon to prevent future incidents.
