Anthony I. Ignatiadis-Isabelle killed himself after shooting a staff member at Westwood Hills Elementary School

Anthony I. Ignatiadis-Isabelle, a 19-year-old suspect, forced his way into Westwood Hills Elementary School in Waynesboro, Virginia, on Wednesday morning. After entering the building, he shot one staff member before turning the gun on himself in the school's library. The staff member was subsequently released from the hospital. Law enforcement arrived at the scene approximately three minutes after being notified of the gunman. The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that all students, teachers, and staff were safely evacuated from the school. Students were reunited with their families at the fellowship hall of the nearby Westminster Presbyterian Church. Waynesboro Public Schools superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Cassell stated that safety protocols and lockdown procedures worked as intended. The school will remain closed on Thursday. Governor Abigail Spanberger monitored the situation and expressed her support for the students and first responders. Authorities have not yet determined a motive for the shooting.
