Ukraine's General Staff reports Russian military personnel losses exceeded 42,000 in August 2026

Ukraine's General Staff reported that Russian military personnel losses reached 42,020 in August 2026. This figure represents a second consecutive month of losses exceeding 40,000, following 42,860 casualties in July. Over the three summer months of 2026, Russian forces lost a total of 124,170 personnel, a 25.8% increase compared to the corresponding period in the spring. Reports indicate that Russia is struggling to replace these battlefield losses at the same pace as they occur. While Russia has been recruiting approximately 1,000 people per day over the past two months, the intake of new personnel remains below the number of troops killed and wounded. The Institute for the Study of War noted that Russia's current force generation system based on volunteer recruitment continues to struggle to recruit enough soldiers to replace current losses. President Vladimir Putin denied reports of a new round of mobilization, describing the reports as complete nonsense.
