A 17-year-old boy from Plaquemines Parish died after falling from a stairwell in an abandoned New Orleans high-rise.

A 17-year-old boy from Plaquemines Parish was pronounced dead at the scene after falling from a stairs in the Plaza Tower, an abandoned high-rise in New Orleans' Central Business District. The incident occurred around midnight on Saturday, while the victim and a group of friends were exploring the building and consuming alcohol. New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick stated that the group entered the fenced-off private property and ascended to a higher floor. While attempting to descend the stairs, the boy fell to his death. Another teen from the group was hospitalized with a deep laceration to his arm and wrist. Police are currently investigating the incident. Chief Kirkpatrick noted that while trespassing charges may be issued, the priority is currently on allowing the family and friends to grieve. The Plaquemines Parish School District issued a statement expressing condolences and requested that the public refrain from speculation while the investigation remains active.
