Sarah Santiago Indicted on Murder Charges for Aiding San Diego Islamic Center Shooting

A 17-year-old North Carolina teenager, Sarah Santiago, has been indicted on three counts of first-degree murder and one count of conspiracy in connection with the mass shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Although she was not physically present at the scene, prosecutors stated she agreed to record and distribute the livestream of the attack and release the shooters' manifesto. The indictment also notes that Santiago purchased and sent a white-supremacist patch for one of the gunmen to wear during the event. On May 18, two teenage gunmen killed three people—Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha, and Nadir Awad—before taking their own lives. Authorities believe the shooters were slowed by Abdullah, who returned fire and injured one of the gunmen, potentially preventing the shooters from advancing on a nearby school. The shooters had planned to attack a local Jewish temple and a predominantly Black high school next, but they stopped after the mosque attack. Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O'Neill stated that the law is clear regarding a person being guilty of a crime even if they did not perform the acts personally. Santiago's attorney, Alan Doorasamy Sr., stated that his client is innocent of all the charges. The case is expected to be heard in a North Carolina court on September 21.
