Jan Peterson remains in critical condition after being shot six times during a mass shooting at Minneapolis apartment building

Jan Peterson, a property manager at the Shoreline Plaza apartment building in downtown Minneapolis, remains in critical condition after being shot six times during a mass shooting on Wednesday. The shooting began outside the building's entrance during a custody handoff, where the gunman, Carlton Johnson II, shot and wounded a woman believed to be the mother of his child. Johnson then shot two building employees, including Peterson, before moving to the ninth floor to kill two residents. The gunman was eventually killed in an exchange of fire with police. Two residents, Muse Abdi Afrah and Dale Henry Spry, were killed in the building. Additionally, Nyemuoch Pal was wounded during the initial custody handoff. Two Minneapolis police officers were hit by gunfire, and another officer was injured by glass. Court documents show that Johnson had been under investigation for several months. He was facing eviction and had previously threatened to harm people with a firearm. Despite these documented threats and a June incident where he displayed a weapon, the county prosecutor decided not to file charges or an extreme risk protective order. Following the shooting, advocates and lawmakers are calling for stronger red flag laws in Minnesota to better intervene before threats become funerals.
