Joseph Sais was assaulted by a group of four men in Sacramento's LGBTQ+ district of Lavender Heights.

Joseph Sais was assaulted by a group of four men early Sunday morning in Sacramento's LGBTQ+ district of Lavender Heights. The men allegedly shouted racist and anti-LGBTQ+ slurs while chasing and punching Sais and his friend. Sais reported that his face hit the ground and his clothes were bloodied during the altercation. Police have filed a felony assault bias report for the incident, but no arrests have been made yet. City Councilmember Phil Pluckebaum described the attack as infuriating and noted that the city lacks the resources to provide the level of security some residents feel is needed. The incident occurred in an area that has seen recent safety concerns. Less than a year ago, Alvin Prasad was assaulted in the same neighborhood and later died from his injuries. The Sacramento LGBT Community Center is currently working with partners to improve safety in the area through better lighting and communication between community members and public agencies.
