More than 16,000 high school seniors nationwide are named semifinalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program

More than 16,000 high school seniors across the United States have been named semifinalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students, who represent less than 1% of the U.S. high school senior population, qualified for the position based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The semifinalists are competing for approximately 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth about $24 million, which will be awarded in the spring of 2027. To advance to the finalist stage, students must submit a detailed application covering their academic records, leadership, extracurricular activities, and employment. They must also provide SAT or ACT scores to confirm their initial performance and receive a recommendation from a high school official. National Merit officials expect more than 15,000 of the current semifinalists to reach finalist status. Approximately half of the finalists will eventually receive a scholarship and earn the title of Merit Scholar. The awards will include National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, corporate-sponsored scholarships, and college-sponsored scholarships.
