Erika Lozano and Rodrigo Lara report critical forest fire situation in Tolima department with 24 active fires

The Tolima department is currently facing a critical environmental emergency as 24 forest fires remain active across 13 municipalities. Erika Lozano, the Secretary of Environment and Risk Management of Tolima, reported that approximately 20,000 hectares have been affected, leaving 18,000 head of cattle without food. The fires are occurring simultaneously in areas without a primary agricultural vocation, leading authorities to investigate potential human-caused patterns. Rodrigo Lara, the Minister of the Interior, noted that the terrain is the primary difficulty for logistics and access. He reported that over 150 firefighters from various departments are deployed to coordinate actions. The situation is exacerbated by a recent 7.4 magnitude earthquake, which also damaged homes and infrastructure. To manage the crisis, the administration has declared a public calamity. The Tolima government is seeking international support from the FAO and the World Food Programme. Despite the challenges, officials emphasize that tourism in areas like Melgar and Honda remains open to support the local economy.
