Three people died after a Honda Pilot crashed into an oxygen tank truck on Interstate 66 in Fairfax County

Three people died at the scene of a multi-vehicle crash on westbound Interstate 66 in Fairfax County on Sunday afternoon. A Honda Pilot struck the rear of a truck carrying oxygen tanks that was stopped in the right travel lane of the express lanes near the Dunn Loring-Merrifield Metro station. The Honda Pilot caught fire, resulting in the deaths of all three occupants. Virginia State Police reported that a Toyota 4Runner was involved in the events leading up to the collision. Following a consultation with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, the drivers of both the Toyota and the truck were charged with reckless driving. The crash occurred at approximately 4:10 p.m. near mile marker 64.3. The accident caused significant traffic delays, and all lanes of the westbound express lanes were closed for several hours. The lanes were officially reopened just before 11 p.m. Sunday. The investigation into the collision remains ongoing.
