The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) reported the tremor occurred at a depth of 149 kilometers with an epicenter in the Los Santos municipality of the Santander department. While initial reports suggested a magnitude of 5.4, the SGC revised the figure to 5.1. Residents in the capital and the northeastern city of Bucaramanga were evacuated as a precaution, though authorities reported no casualties or serious damage. The tremor occurred just 16 days after a major 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on August 10, which left more than 300 people dead. The day began with several smaller tremors, including a magnitude 3.1 quake in Los Santos. Diego Armando Mendoza, the mayor of Los Santos, confirmed that while the quake caused alarm, there were no reports of serious damage or injuries. The SGC continues to monitor seismic activity as the country remains active due to interacting tectonic plates.
