Authorities in Romania have located the remains of George Smyth, a British teenager who disappeared while hiking in the Bucegi Mountains.
Romanian authorities have discovered the body of George Smyth, an 18-year-old geology student from Bristol who vanished in November while trekking through Romania’s Bucegi Mountains. The discovery follows a search effort that lasted nearly nine months, potentially providing closure for the family of the student who traveled alone to the Transylvania region. Avon and Somerset Police announced that the remains were found in the Brașov region, where documents bearing Smyth's name were discovered alongside the body. While formal identification is still being processed, the discovery offers a relief to his relatives who had endured months of uncertainty. Smyth had contacted emergency services on November 23, 2025, reporting severe cold exposure and exhaustion in a remote area. The search was complicated by severe weather, including heavy snowfall and and dense fog, which limited access to difficult terrain. Rescuers from Salvamont Brașov Mountain Rescue spent months combing the area, using drones and canine units to locate the remains. Once identification is finalized, arrangements will be made to return Smyth's remains to the United Kingdom.
