Phil Buehler to Display 9/11 Missing Posters in Brooklyn Exhibition

Artist Phil Buehler will present a selection of over 500 photographs of missing posters from the September 11 attacks at a new exhibition in Brooklyn. The installation, titled "Countenance: The 9/11 Missing Posters," will be displayed at Most Holy Trinity – St Mary’s church from September 5 to September 13. Phil Buehler captured these images during the days following the attacks, documenting the raw, personal pleas for information from families who lost loved ones. The posters featured a diverse cross-section of the twin towers' workforce, including investment bankers, firefighters, and transit workers. Co-curated with Sarah Celentano and Olena Speranska, the exhibition aims to communicate the human face of the tragedy. Sarah Celentano noted that the photographs provide a human bridge for those who were not alive to witness the events. The exhibition serves as a reminder of the shared grief and spontaneous memorialization that occurred in the years following the attacks. The church location was chosen to provide a spiritual setting for the work, as Phil Buehler noted that grief is often better suited for a church than a gallery.
