Sergey Brin urges Alphabet to prioritize Gemini LLM as Koray Kavukcuoglu takes over as new AI head
Alphabet co-founder Sergey Brin has urged his parent company to focus more on its proprietary large language model, Gemini. This move comes as the company centralizes AI leadership to compete with rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic. Koray Kavukcuoglu, the former chief AI architect of Google, will step down as the head of the AI unit, succeeding Demis Hassabis. Kavukcuoglu will oversee the development of Gemini, including its app and developer teams. The administration of the company's AI operations has become more hands-on, with Google reporting that Gemini models now process 22 billion API tokens per minute. Despite a recent cash burn of $5.90 billion in the second quarter, Google's revenues increased by 24% year-over-year to $119.80 billion. Analysts maintain a 'Strong Buy' rating on the stock, with a consensus price target of $429.63, reflecting a 24.2% upside from current levels.
