Three civilians were killed in the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia on July 6 after a Russian drone, guided entirely by an experimental artificial intelligence system, struck a gas station area. The victims, Tetiana Bubynets, Oleksiy Svirin, and Roman Karpiy, were among a group of residents seeking shelter when the drone crashed and exploded. This incident marks a significant milestone in modern warfare, as it is reported to be the first instance in the Russia-Ukraine war where a completely AI-driven system made the final targeting decision without human intervention. While operators directed the drone toward the general vicinity, the onboard AI software used image-recognition training to select the specific propane tanks as the target. Investigators recovered Nvidia Jetson Orin modules from the wreckage, which are consumer-grade products typically used for robotics and research. Although Nvidia does not sell directly to Russia, the modules were acquired through third-level resellers. The development has sparked debate among military experts and humanitarian organizations regarding the speed, scale, and moral responsibility of autonomous weapons systems.
