The Swiss village of Kandersteg faces a looming landslide threat from the unstable mountain rock formation known as Spitze Stei.

Residents of the Swiss village of Kandersteg are preparing for a potential massive landslide from the Spitze Stei rock formation. The formation, which consists of roughly 15-20 million cubic meters of rock and ice, threatens to collapse into the valley as permafrost and glaciers melt due to rising global temperatures. Markus Stoffel, a professor at the University of Geneva, explained that melting ice acts as a cement for mountain slopes; as it thaws, the debris becomes increasingly unstable. While a similar disaster struck the nearby village of Blatten in May 2025, locals in Kandersteg believe they are well-prepared. Resident Rudolf Isler noted that while global warming is the primary driver of the instability, the village has seen stones fall for years and has established evacuation plans. Experts suggest the rock is more likely to break down gradually rather than in one single collapse, though some may eventually have to abandon certain valleys if protection costs become too high.
