Sanae Takaichi reports 37 people injured after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake strikes eastern Japan.

Sanae Takaichi reported that a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the southern part of the Ibaraki Prefecture early Sunday morning, causing strong shaking across eastern Japan. The tremor, which occurred at a depth of approximately 68 to 70 kilometers, was felt prominently in Tokyo and surrounding prefectures, including Saitama, Chiba, and Kanagawa. Authorities from the Fire and Disaster Management Agency confirmed at least 37 people were injured, most of whom sustained light injuries from falling out of bed or hitting furniture while caught off guard. One woman in her 80s suffered a serious hip injury in Yokohama. While there was no tsunami threat, the quake caused minor disruptions to regional train services and a ruptured water pipe in Tokyo's Koto Ward. The Japan Meteorological Agency urged residents to remain vigilant for potential aftershocks for about a week. Nuclear power plants in the region, including the Tokai No.2 and Fukushima Daiichi facilities, reported no abnormalities or changes in radiation levels.
