Anthropic released a new economic growth model to project how artificial intelligence will impact the economy by the end of the decade. The model illustrates three distinct scenarios: AI acting as a helpful sidekick for workers, AI performing half of all knowledge work autonomously, and AI outperforming humans at nearly every knowledge-work task. In the scenario where AI outperforms humans at nearly every knowledge-work task, the model projects a 15% annual GDP growth rate, which would double the size of the economy every four and a half years. However, the administration announced that while society would be far wealthier, unemployment could climb well past typical recession levels. Anthropic stated that the model is a stark simplification of the complex reality and does not account for policy responses or financial market disruptions. The company also released an interactive tool for economists and policy experts to explore these assumptions. Anthropic noted that the technology's economic impact depends heavily on how quickly companies adopt the technology and whether it replaces workers or simply assists them.
