Warren Pandiscia files class action lawsuit against Amazon for using Twitch content to train AI models without permission

Warren Pandiscia, a Connecticut-based streamer, has filed a class action lawsuit against Amazon and its subsidiary Twitch. The suit alleges that the companies breached their contract with millions of streamers by using their videos and audio as a dataset to train Amazon's AI models without obtaining proper permission or fair compensation. While Amazon provided an opt-out feature for users, the lawsuit argues that streamers should not have their work commercially exploited as free training stock for separate commercial products. The complaint claims that streamers lost money or property as a result of the companies' allegedly unlawful, unfair, and fraudulent practices. Twitch's chief product officer, Mike Minton, noted that the settings are enabled by default, requiring users to manually opt out. Amazon, which purchased Twitch for nearly $1bn in 2014, is currently competing with tech giants like Google and Meta to establish its position in the AI market.
