Luis Enrique Barragán Chávez dies in federal operation in Michoacán

Luis Enrique Barragán Chávez, known as 'R5' or 'El Güicho,' was killed during a federal operation in the municipality of Tocumbo, Michoacán. The criminal leader of the Los Reyes Cartel died during a confrontation with federal forces at the Rodeo del Pinal ranch. Barragán Chávez assumed leadership of the Los Reyes Cartel following the detention of Alfonso Fernández Magallón, alias 'La Quiringua,' in August. The group is a key player in the region's avocado production zone, where Barragán Chávez was identified as a primary coordinator of extortion against producers. The United States Department of State offered a reward of three million dollars for information leading to his arrest. The administration designated the alliance of criminal organizations known as Cárteles Unidos, which includes the Los Reyes Cartel, as a foreign terrorist organization. Security forces, including the National Defense Secretariat and the National Guard, executed the operation based on military intelligence. The death of Barragán Chávez represents a significant blow to the criminal structure in the western region of Michoacán.
