Drexel University and the Academy of Natural Sciences reach agreement to maintain affiliation and preserve research mission
Drexel University and the Academy of Natural Sciences reached a tentative agreement to continue their affiliation, ensuring Drexel University maintains financial support for the Academy. The agreement provides Drexel University with control over major decision-making, including the annual budget of approximately $25 million. While the Academy of Natural Sciences will close its museum on September 30, 2026, the institutions remain committed to the Academy's research and education missions. The Academy of Natural Sciences will move its 19 million artifacts out of its current building on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, which is slated for sale. To guide the transition, Philadelphia Deputy Mayor Patricia "Trish" Wellenbach will serve as a senior adviser on loan from the city. Former U.S. Ambassador David L. Cohen is brokering the deal at the request of Governor Josh Shapiro and Mayor Cherelle L. Parker. The agreement maintains the Academy's right to de-affiliate from Drexel University if desired, while Drexel University covers the costs of relocation and transition expenses.
