Fernando FarĂas Laguna remains detained in Argentina as Mexico negotiates his extradition for alleged fuel smuggling.

Mexican Rear Admiral Fernando Farías Laguna remains in custody in Argentina as the Mexican government negotiates his repatriation for alleged fuel smuggling. The administration announced that while his transfer is certain, a pending legal matter in Argentina has delayed the process. Defense attorney Félix Helou noted that the FBI and DEA met with Farías Laguna to discuss potential cooperation, as the United States government intervened to convince Argentina to deliver him without a formal extradition process. Helou argued that a formal hearing on August 27 will determine the final transfer date. Farías Laguna was captured in April after entering Argentina with a false passport. He is accused of leading a smuggling network that seized 10 million liters of fuel in Tamaulipas. His defense team argues that a sudden transfer without a legal ruling would be an illegal operation. Meanwhile, his wife, Mónica Gómez, expressed concern for his safety, noting that he fears being intimidated by those who and want to collaborate on the case.
