Ezekiel Emanuel and Research Partners Argue Autonomous AI Will Outperform Human Doctors by 2030
Bioethicist Ezekiel Emanuel and a team of researchers published a paper in JAMA arguing that autonomous artificial intelligence models will likely outperform both physicians and human-AI hybrid teams by 2030. The authors, which include research fellow Abe Baker-Butler and venture capitalist Vinod Khosla, suggest that the current prevailing view of AI as a supportive role is insufficient. They cite evidence that AI models, such as Google's Articulate Medical Intelligence Explorer, have already shown superior performance in eliciting patient complaints and reviewing symptoms compared than to human doctors. Furthermore, the researchers warn against overreliance on AI, noting that human doctors may suffer from "AI-induced deskilling" as they lean on technology for cognitive work. While some experts like Robert Wachter argue that AI-aided physicians will remain the premium tier of care, the authors of the JAMA paper advocate for a transition toward fully autonomous systems. They emphasize that while regulatory and liability hurdles remain, the shift toward AI-driven medicine is inevitable as models become smarter and human clinical skills may gradually erode over time.
