Their study suggests that AI could lead to three to 13 times more fossil fuel emissions than the pollution generated by data centers alone. The research highlights a close partnership between the tech and energy sectors, with companies like Microsoft and Amazon investing heavily in fossil fuel infrastructure. To offset the emissions boost provided by AI to the oil and gas industry, the Alpines suggest that AI-driven renewable energy improvements must be four to five times greater than the improvements made to fossil fuels. They are calling for tighter guardrails and better corporate disclosure to ensure that AI serves as a tool for meaningful decarbonization rather than just a lever for continued fossil fuel dominance.
