Cali Mayor Alejandro Eder reported that the magnitude 7.4 earthquake on August 10 left the city with 141 confirmed deaths and nearly 1,600 injured persons. The administration announced a comprehensive report detailing 24 completely collapsed buildings and 177 partially collapsed structures. Mayor Alejandro Eder noted that the recovery process will take at least three years, emphasizing that the private sector must share responsibility for reconstruction. Technical audits are underway to determine if the collapse of relatively new buildings was due to non-compliance with seismic resistance norms. The administration announced a specialized team of engineers will be formed to evaluate these structures. While 88 people were rescued alive from the rubble, the city continues to work on identifying the remaining six victims. The administration announced that over 10,000 families have been registered in the census of damaged properties, with a significant portion of the middle class affected. Efforts are currently focused on organizing humanitarian aid and improving the and official and community-managed shelters.
