The government of Morelia is cutting hundreds of trees to make way for a user-friendly public transportation project. This massive removal of urban vegetation represents a significant loss of natural heritage in Michoacán, as the city prioritizes concrete infrastructure over ecological balance. Experts warn that the loss of these trees will trigger a severe increase in urban heat islands, deteriorate air quality, and increase the risk of flooding during the rainy season. Furthermore, local fauna, including the Michoacán salamander, will lose their shelter and food sources, breaking essential ecological chains. To mitigate these impacts, the government of Morelia has modified the project to preserve the camellones and reduce the intervention on the trees. Specifically, the government of Morelia has ordered the transplanting of 27 shrubs from the Tres Puentes area to allow for the Morebús works. This shift reflects a need for more sustainable mobility solutions that do not sacrifice the city's ecosystem and biodiversity.
