Algeria severs diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates following years of regional tensions

Algeria has officially severed diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates after what the Algerian foreign ministry described as a series of "provocative and hostile" actions by Abu Dhabi. The ministry stated that the decision followed the exhaustion of all means to preserve bilateral relations and that Algeria had issued repeated warnings regarding the UAE's conduct. To facilitate the break, Algeria summoned the UAE ambassador and provided a 48-hour window to comply with the decision. Additionally, the Algerian defense ministry announced a ban on the airspace of all UAE-registered aircraft starting Friday, with the exception of commercial flights to and from Algiers, which are permitted until the end of 2026. The rupture is driven by several long-standing disagreements. Algeria opposes the UAE's normalization of ties with Israel, while the UAE supports Morocco's claims over Western Sahara, contrasting with Algeria's support for the Polisario Front. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has frequently criticized the UAE as a "micro-state" that seeks to destabilize regional nations, specifically citing conflicts in Libya, Mali, and Sudan.
