Alibaba Overtakes Google and Meta in Open-Weight AI Downloads with 3 Billion Downloads

Alibaba has established itself as a global leader in the open-weight AI market, surpassing major U.S. tech giants in total downloads. The Chinese tech giant reported that its Qwen family of AI models has seen over 3 billion downloads worldwide in the last six months, exceeding the figures for Meta and Google. According to data from Hugging Face, Qwen-based models now account for over 150,000 derivatives, which is 2.6 times the total footprint of Meta's Llama models. To maintain its competitive edge, Alibaba launched the Qwen3.8-27B model, designed to run on consumer hardware like laptops. This dense model offers high performance in coding and knowledge work, matching the capabilities of frontier models from American labs like Anthropic. AMD has provided Day 0 support for the new model, allowing developers to run it locally on Ryzen AI Max+ processors and Radeon AI PRO R9700 graphics cards. The release highlights a shift toward on-device AI, where Alibaba aims to provide a high-quality, open-weight alternative to proprietary models from Silicon Valley.
