Emergency crews respond to chemical leak in La Habra neighborhood causing orange smoke plume

Emergency crews responded to a chemical leak at a manufacturing facility in the 500 block of South Cypress Street in La Habra on Tuesday. The incident occurred at a factory that produces industrial cleaners, where chemicals in the system accidentally came into contact with residual chemicals, causing a reaction that produced an orange smoke plume. Los Angeles County Fire Department crews and La Habra Police Department officers secured the area and issued a shelter-in-place order for residents within a one-mile radius. Washington Middle School, located approximately half a mile away, was evacuated. Paramedics checked three employees at the scene, who showed no signs of injury or discomfort. Hazmat teams mitigated the leak and verified that the chemical produced was inert and posed no danger to residents. The shelter-in-place order was lifted by 2:30 p.m., and active air monitoring remains in place. Cypress Street was temporarily closed between Lambert Road and La Habra Boulevard during the response.
