Roosevelt S. Perdomo Torres remains hospitalized after cargo plane overruns runway and strikes van at Miami International Airport
Roosevelt S. Perdomo Torres, a 36-year-old survivor of a cargo plane crash at Miami International Airport, remained in the intensive care unit on Friday. The crash occurred when a Boeing 767-300 cargo jet, operated by 21 Air for Amazon, overran the runway and struck a van carrying cleaning workers and a nearby SUV. The impact killed five workers from Professional Ocean Service Corp.: Rolando Aleman Leon, Yoel Rodriguez Naranjo, Julio C. Pineda, Carlos Acosta Fajardo, and Javierkys Reyes Quevedo. Perdomo Torres was thrown from the van and suffered fractures to his hand, leg, and ankle. National Transportation Safety Board investigators reported that the jet was approaching the runway too fast and descending excessively. Data from the flight recorders indicated that the pilots, Joseph Carol and Jaime Silva, attempted a go-around maneuver before deciding to land. The jet traveled 1,300 feet past the paved surface. Lawsuits have been filed on behalf of the victims' families, alleging negligence by the pilots and the companies involved. Amazon stated it is committed to supporting the families and cooperating with the NTSB investigation.
