Amazon.com Inc. Zoox has begun deploying its fully autonomous vehicles onto the streets of San Francisco, placing the company in direct competition with Alphabet Inc. Waymo. The purpose-built electric vehicles, which lack steering wheels and pedals, feature face-to-face seating for four passengers and are capable of traveling in both directions. This expansion follows a recent move to offer paid rides in Las Vegas after receiving a government exemption to operate commercially without conventional driver controls. Zoox has already accumulated over 3 million autonomous miles and transported nearly 1 million passengers. Amazon acquired Zoox for approximately $1.2 billion in 2020. While the unit is currently small compared to Amazon's core e-commerce and AWS operations, the expansion into major markets like San Francisco represents a significant milestone for the long-term growth of the company's autonomous driving technology.
