Ezekiel Emanuel and Vinod Khosla Predict AI Will Soon Surpass Human Physicians in Medical Care

A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests that artificial intelligence may soon provide better patient care than human physicians alone. The paper, authored by bioethicist Ezekiel Emanuel and venture capitalist Vinod Khosla, concludes that AI-alone medical care is likely to be superior to physician-only or physician-AI hybrid models in cognitive medical functions. The study claims that AI already surpasses doctors in five fundamental tasks, including diagnosis and chronic disease management. However, some medical professionals express caution. John Whyte, CEO of the American Medical Association, noted that many studies are simulations rather than blinded experiments. Whyte argued that physicians should remain in control of care plans. Similarly, researcher Shreya Johri stated that while AI is a powerful tool for diagnosis, doctors must remain responsible for the final decisions. Current applications include radiology, where 76% of FDA-approved AI models are used, and surgery, where AI recently assisted in a successful brain surgery in London. While AI excels at repetitive, data-heavy tasks, experts suggest it will complement human judgment and empathy rather than fully replacing the medical profession.
