Anthropic reduces Claude Opus 5 pricing to attract enterprise customers and manage compute constraints.
Anthropic slashed the price of Claude Opus 5 to $5 and $25 per million tokens to compete with cheaper rivals from Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. The move follows reports that enterprise customers were defecting to more affordable options. Simultaneously, the administration announced that Anthropic capped access to its top model, Fable 5, at 50% of usage limits for paying subscribers due to compute constraints. Data from Vercel's AI Gateway reveals that while Anthropic's closed models capture the majority of spending, they process a minority of the tokens. Open-weight models have seen a rapid increase in token volume, now accounting for 62% of all tokens processed. This shift suggests that enterprises, including AT&T and Coinbase, are prioritizing cost-reduction strategies. Despite the high volume of the open-weight models, Anthropic remains a dominant revenue generator, earning significantly more per token than its competitors. The high per-token cost of Fable 5 also indicates a strong willingness among new customers to pay for premium models.
