The Ministry of Health initiates administrative investigation into Salmonella outbreak at Mexico City Hospital Dr. Eduardo Liceaga

The Ministry of Health has initiated an administrative investigation into a Salmonella spp. outbreak that occurred at the resident physicians' cafeteria of the General Hospital of Mexico 'Dr. Eduardo Liceaga'. The outbreak, detected on August 31, affected at least 135 resident physicians and high-specialty doctors who consumed food in the cafeteria. Symptoms included abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of Salmonella spp. in analyzed cases, with two patients also showing a co-infection with Escherichia coli enterotoxigenic (ETEC) bacteria. The Secretariat for Anti-Corruption and Good Governance confirmed that the investigation was formally opened on September 3 to determine the responsibility of government officials and the company operating the subcontracted food service. The hospital cafeteria has remained closed since September 1. As part of the investigation, the Internal Control Body of the Ministry of Health requested medical updates from the affected individuals and conducted a verification visit on September 4 to gather testimonies and audit food preparation conditions. The Ministry of Health announced a large deployment of investigations to review the hygienic-sanitary conditions of food services across the entire public health system of the country.
