MapQuest maintains Lake Ontario name while Google and Apple adopt Lake America label following executive order

The administration announced that Lake Ontario would be renamed to "Lake America" via an executive order issued by President Trump. This change was initiated during an escalating trade war with Canada, which has resulted in the administration hiking tariffs on both sides of the border. While Google and Apple have updated their maps to display "Lake America" for U.S. users, MapQuest has decided to retain the original name. MapQuest reported a surge in mobile app downloads following its announcement that it would not change the name. The company's general manager, Doug Berger, stated that the map service aims to provide users with familiar names. Public opinion on the renaming is largely negative. A Reuters-Ipsos poll indicates that 63% of Americans oppose the renaming, with only 14% in support. Even within the administration's own party, Republicans lean toward the original name. Canada has also expressed opposition, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ontario Premier Doug Ford have both rejected the move, noting the lake's Indigenous roots and its long history as Lake Ontario.
