Apple proposes new commission structure for external links in ongoing legal battle with Epic Games
Apple submitted a proposal to the U.S. District Court of Northern California outlining a new commission structure for digital purchases made via external links within its iOS apps. The company seeks to charge 15% for standard apps, 10% for apps in its News, Video, and Mini Apps Partner Programs, and 5% for apps in its Small Business Program. This move follows a long-running legal dispute with Epic Games, which began in 2020. While a 2021 court order initially required Apple to allow external links without a commission, a subsequent appeals court ruling allowed the company to charge fees based on "necessary costs." Apple argues that these fees will allow it to recoup investments in the tools and technology it provides to developers. Epic Games responded by stating that the proposed fees are "far outside of the bounds" of the court's guidance. Additionally, Apple has requested court-supervised settlement talks with Epic Games to resolve the litigation.
