Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and former senior system electrical engineer Chang Liu for the alleged misappropriation of proprietary hardware designs and trade secrets. The complaint alleges that Liu, who previously worked for Apple, used confidential files and circuit schematics from Apple's third-party cloud storage to run simulations during his tenure at OpenAI. Apple provided evidence from a Liu-used MacBook laptop to support its claims. The forensic investigation of the laptop allegedly revealed that Liu used software packages with names identical to Apple's proprietary internal engineering tools. Apple further claimed that after Liu learned of the internal investigation, he directed a coworker at OpenAI to restore Apple-issued devices, which Apple characterized as an attempt to erase forensic evidence. OpenAI denied any wrongdoing, describing Apple's charges as aggressive and personal. Apple is seeking damages, a preliminary injunction, and court orders to destroy any materials containing its protected technology.
